Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

AEDs are computerized devices that can be used by lay rescuers. To assist, AEDs provide voice and visual prompts to lead rescuers through the steps of operation.

Early bystander CPR is less helpful if defibrillation is administered later than 8-12 minutes after collapse. Studies have repeatedly shown the importance of by-stander CPR plus defibrillation within 3-5 minutes of collapse; improve survival from sudden VF cardiac arrest.
